The Importance of Symbols in Feng Shui

When I mention being a Feng Shui consultant, people sometimes ask me where to place the 'frog', or what to put in the 'Relationship corner' to attract a good relationship.

Firstly, have a look at my article on Feng Shui Myths and Truths to bust any misconceptions you may have about the relationship or wealth corners.

For now, we will have a look at what symbols have to do with Feng Shui? - Is the Feng Shui toad or the pair of Peking Ducks of any real value in improving wealth or relationships?

Historically in China, Feng Shui masters were keeping Feng Shui knowledge very secret. While real Feng Shui was passed only from one master to the next, common people were given symbols such as the Feng Shui toad - harmless emblems to keep them happy.

To what extend this sort of tradition has spilled into our culture, is for you to judge.

How to Use Symbols
Although symbols are not part of 'real' Feng Shui, they can nevertheless be a wonderful tool.

As long as you use a symbol intentionally, it can remind you of what you want to create in life.

Here is a story of an Olympian athlete: She had a picture of a gold medal placed on her mirror in such a way that when she looked into the mirror in the morning, she would see herself with a gold medal around her neck.

Even when she felt down, she was reminded of her goal.

This enabled her to pull herself together, to raise her spirit and go through her daily training practice, even on days when she would have rather stayed in bed.

She went on to win a medal in Athens.
The symbol of the gold medal reminded her consciously and sub-consciously of what she wanted to achieve. It helped her push her intention into fruition.

Let's look at a goal you may have for your personal or business life: If you ignored all distractions and negative thoughts, stayed focused on your goal, and took active steps to achieve it, you would have a very good chance of getting there.

You could also use a symbol, like the gold medal, to help you keep and reinforce your mental focus. This could be a symbol representing a happy marriage, or one representing wealth. It could be anything as long as it characterised your goal to you.

Just be clear that it is not the symbol that somehow magically achieves your goal, but your own mental focus and physical effort.

You are the one who imbues a symbol with meaning, and only you can make it a powerful reminder of your aspiration.

No prescribed emblem can automatically do that for you. If you put up a toad because it represents wealth in China, - forget it. Unless, looking at the toad inspires you to think, act and feel 'rich', it won't do a thing.

Having cultural meanings assigned to dragons, frogs and ducks may be just ignorance, or it could be a plot to keep people inactive and obedient??? It can definitely be detrimental to taking responsibility for your life.

But coming back to the positive: Feel free and creative in using symbols to reinforce your intentions - they don't have to be the agreed upon Chinese ones. Paint a picture or find an image or object that represents to you what you want.

Whatever you do, make sure you know that you create the outcomes of your life, not the symbol, the frog or the coin under your doormat. The power of symbols is really the power of your own mind.

Therefore, using symbols is not actually Feng Shui
With Feng Shui, we manipulate the aspects of the physical universe: matter, energy, space and time to bring them into harmony with nature. These building blocks are existent in any environment and not based on belief or your mind.

Feng Shui will help getting a space right, no matter what you think about it.

If you want to add using your mind and symbols to Feng Shui in order to create positive outcomes in life, go for it with awareness and abandon.
