How to Create a Window Garden

When your living space is limited and you're feeling cramped in your quarters, you've got to get creative decorating. Creating a window garden is great way to expand your space, and by putting beautiful plants outside windows and balconies, you can really add color, privacy and life to your home.

First of all, choose a location for the window garden. Almost any window will work: on decks, outside large windows in containers or even on widow sills. Gardens will thrive outside windows that get a lot of sunlight, and need to be accessible because growing plants need regular maintenance.
Second, select a container. Choose a container that's appropriate for the size of the plants, and get creative with size and color. A window sill may only hold a small rectangular container, but be creative with larger spaces. Paint containers to add some style, but make sure the garden fits with the overall look of the interior and exterior of the building.

Third,Determine how much sunlight the garden will get. Choose plants that thrive in the container's environment. You can find flowers that can live in almost any condition, but if you want to grow vegetables or herbs, be mindful of the space. Tomatoes and cucumbers need a lot of sun, while cabbage and lettuce can tolerate more shade.

And then, plant the garden in the container, leaving enough space between the plants for proper growth. There are many flowers that live successfully in containers such as begonias, petunias and periwinkle.
water the plants or flowers in the window gardens on a regular basis, and remember different plants might require different amounts of water. Use fertilizer if your garden needs a boost.
