Fragrant Homemade Ornaments

Use these homemade ornaments to add fragrant beauty to your holiday decorations.

The holiday season invokes deep memories of years gone by and scent memories are some of the very strongest. By creating a visual and olfactory display you'll get double the delight this holiday season. The following homemade ornaments and holiday decorations are both wonderfully smelly and easy enough to make that children can help.

Seasonal Sachets. Peppermint Potpourri is made by mixing 1 pound rosebuds and petals, 1/2 pound black peppermint, 1/4 pound orris root, 1/2 cup lemon peel, and 1 tablespoon cinnamon. Use holiday fabric and ribbon to wrap the sachets and tie them to your tree.

Cinnamon Cookie Ornaments. Take 3 cups of applesauce and drain through cheesecloth for a few hours to siphon out the liquid. Mix the drained applesauce with 8 to 10 ounces of ground cinnamon until you get a thick dough. Place the dough on waxed paper and cover with waxed paper and roll it out as you would cookie dough. Cut out holiday shapes and make sure you create a hole for stringing (a straw works well for this). Bake in 175-degree oven for 6 to 8 hours (yes, hours). When cookies are completely dry you can string them with ribbon and hang on the tree or further decorate them with paint and glitter.

Homemade Candles. Making candles can be very involved, but for a simple holiday treasure you'll need wax, an old pot, fragrant oil, wicks and votive holders. Melt the wax in your pot on your stove, be careful so you don't get burned. Then mix in several drops of fragrant oil to get a nice holiday smell. When completely melted, carefully pour into the votives. Tie one end of the wick to a pencil and drape the part that will go into the wax downward and place the pencil across the top of the votive holder until wax hardens.

Holiday Soap. Purchase some unscented clear glycerin soap, fragrant oil and some silk holiday flowers - poinsettias work best. Either rip or cut off the petals and leaves of the flowers; small pieces work best. Melt soap in an old pot on the stove and add fragrant oils when fully melted. Use tongs to dip leaves and petals into soap and lay on a paper towel until dry. When finished, display them in a holiday bowl by hand sinks and use one per wash.

All of these holiday decorations are easy enough to make with your children, although supervision is necessary in most cases and help is essential in some.
By creating fragrant homemade decorations you're instilling memories in your children, family, and guests that may last a lifetime. In fact, you may be creating a new tradition that will last through the ages. Happy Holidays!
