Custom wood fireplace mantels bestow individuality and allure to your fireplace, providing your home with a decorative piece of woodwork that will be admired for years. Custom-made means you make the decision of selecting a style and finish that fits your home decor.
Woodworkers have been designing and constructing wood fireplace mantels since the 14th century. Back then most where hand carved, taking months to finish. Today they are crafted at a much faster rate, however the same designs are still used. They range from a simple mantle shelf to an elaborate pedestal mantel encompassing an entire wall.
Fireplace Mantel Shelf
A fireplace mantel shelf consists of a top, roughly 12" deep, with molding affixed beneath. Crown molding is the norm for this application; however, styles that are more rustic may have stepped out layers of wood. Decorative corbels added underneath serve as brackets as well as adornments. A vertical skirt set behind the corbels give the mantel shelf a thicker look, while more crown mold cut in between the corbels add even more ornamentation.
Pedestal Fireplace Mantel
The pedestal fireplace mantel starts out as a mantel shelf, often adding a second step of crown mold. Legs attached on each side extend to the ground or the hearth. These legs are often decorated with flutes, onlays, or raised panels. Between the legs and below the shelf, a panel is added creating a frieze, which gives the mantel its thickness. Corbels are often added at the top of the legs just below the shelf, which adds more detail and character.
